Dress Code & Tips
Garba has a uniform and a grammar. Neither is complicated, and both make the night considerably better.
The uniform
Dress like you intend to dance
Nothing here is enforced at the gate. It is simply what works across four hours of turning in an arena of seven thousand people.

For her
Chaniya Choli
A full flared skirt, a fitted choli and a dupatta. Mirror work, bandhani and heavy thread embroidery all read beautifully under the arena LED · and the wider the skirt, the better the spin looks from the outside of the circle.

For him
Kediyu & Dhoti
A pleated kediyu over churidar or a dhoti, finished with a bandhani turban and a waistcoat if you want the full silhouette. Light cotton beats anything synthetic once the arena fills.
Finishing touches
The details that carry the look
Chaniya Choli
A full flared skirt, fitted blouse and dupatta · mirror work and heavy embroidery read beautifully under the arena LED. Choose a skirt you can spin in for four hours.
Kediyu & Dhoti
A pleated kediyu with churidar or dhoti, finished with a bandhani turban. Light cotton over anything synthetic · you will be moving all night.
Oxidised Silver
Jhumkas, layered necklaces, kadas and payal. Oxidised silver catches gold light better than anything polished.
How to dance
Four things worth knowing before you step in
Find the Taal First
Stand at the edge for one song and count the beat before you step in. Every circle at Shakti Circle runs on the same taal.
Move With the Circle
Garba turns anti-clockwise. Join the outer ring, match the pace of whoever is ahead of you, and let the circle carry you inward.
Strike, Tap, Turn
The basic dandiya raas pattern is three strikes and a turn. Learn that one and you can dance with anyone in the arena.
On the night
Practical things that make the evening easier
Arrive Early
Gates open well before the first set. Come early for the Trishul lighting, the gardens and the food stalls before the arena fills.
Stay Hydrated
Twelve nights of Garba in October heat. Water is available across the grounds · use it between sets, not after.
Keep It On
Your paper wristband is your pass at every gate for the whole season. Keep it on · it is also the thing you take home.
